Abstract

Rapid urban development and increasing population growth have led to many emerging challenges that have negatively affected the quality of life in cities. Based on this, the research discusses the application of the humanization approach in planning and designing residential neighbourhoods to improve the quality of life in them. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has adopted urban strategies that encourage the activation of these concepts within its various cities, which has clearly appeared in the programs of the Kingdom's Vision 2030. Therefore, the research aims to apply the principles of humanization to enhance the quality of life in Riyadh, which preserves the vitality and urban efficiency of neighbourhoods. Riyadh was chosen as a case study due to its distinguished experience, which focused on initiatives that included entertainment centres and major development projects. In continuation of this approach, it supports humanization initiatives, quality of life, urban landscape, walkability, and others, which were adopted by local administrations in Riyadh. "Al-Yasmeen District - North Riyadh" was chosen as a case study, as it expresses the prevailing pattern in North and East Riyadh, and the use of the "inductive approach" for the approaches followed in planning and sustainable urban design of residential neighbourhoods, and the "descriptive and analytical" approach to study the case. The most important results of the research are: Methodological steps that determine the qualitative aspects of humanization principles, applying the directions of quality of life in cities and rooting their local identity and spatial characteristics, which place people and their comfort at the top of development and advancement priorities, in order to achieve the national visions that target sustainable development, quality of life and humanization of cities.
